1. Trust: Find out how long the company has been running its affiliate program. Do they have a history of giving out commissions to their affiliates consistently? Are their products legitimate? You must select a program that has been in operation for at least 2 years and have a good track record of paying on time.

How to Excel in Affiliate Marketing

July 31st, 2009

When people first come across the concept of affiliate marketing, they find themselves in high seas because there are so many terms and ideas which are foreign to them. Articles on affiliate marketing are written for those who already understand the concept. But if you are new to the industry, you might spend many days to get some understanding of how things work in this industry. One of the terms you constant keep reading and hearing is backlinks.

So what is a backlink? It is a URL link from any site which points back to your site. Basically, it is your site URL placed on any other site so that when a visitor clicks the URL from that site, he is taken to your page. Now things start to get more complicated when you introduce words like “keywords”, “anchor text”, “resource box” and so on. But for now, remember that backlink is just a link to your site.

Let us move on to anchor text. The anchor text is simply the words that you click on to for linking to your site. They are the words which appear in blue color and are underlined to show that they are hyperlinks. The HTML code for this might look as follows

I am explaining about backlinks

The word backlink will be clickable and will take you to www.forestmarie.com. Next, we move on to keyword anchor text. This means that I am using the keywords as clickable text. For instance, if you are using the keyword ‘affiliate marketing’ for your article or squidoo lens, then you also use it as the anchor text. So when someone clicks on ‘affiliate marketing’, he is taken to the site which is linked.

Now, you might ask, where does it all lead to? For this, you need to understand a little about how search engines like Google work. First it checks how many backlinks are there to your site and gives one vote per backlink. Next it checks the anchor text that links back to your site and if the keyword matches the content of your site, it gives 5 more votes.

Now, more the votes, better the rank of your site in the search results. The search engine is happy that it is sending the user to the right page. This translates to more traffic for your site eventually. More traffic means more clicks and more clicks mean more sales.

I will tell you a quick way to find how many backlinks your site has, although the exact count will be much higher. Type in Yahoo ‘links:yourdomainname.com’. So as a online marketer, your primary job is to create more backlinks by placing your link in profile pages, article directories, networking sites, and blogs.

Getting Started with Affiliate Marketing

July 30th, 2009

If you are looking to start a home based internet business, then affiliate marketing can be a good way to earn some money. It is important to first understand the overall concept and then leverage it to your benefit. There are many companies that recruit a large number of affiliates to sell their products to save on advertising costs. However, they do not mind paying hefty commissions if a sale happens through an affiliate.

So if you want to earn money, you need to become an affiliate and then promote the company’s products. When customers make purchases from your link, you can earn a percentage of the sales. But first of all you need to identify profitable segments and select the right companies to work with.

1. Select a market with high potential: Start with any field that interests you and find out if there are others who are excited about the same thing. You can do so in an indirect manner by browsing through article directories like ezine and amazines. If you notice that there are many articles written on the subject, it means that the field is hot. You can choose from any of the categories listed on ezine.

2. Select a high potential affiliate product: Every product solves a certain customer need. When you choose a product, see to it that it has good features and a great solution. Most affiliate products and companies are listed on clickbank.com or commission junction. Study the various products in the niche that you have selected and find out the ones with the best sales pitch so that you do not have to worry about writing the sales talk. You can then promote these products on your website or through PPC advertising like Google Adwords.

3. Create an Attractive Lead Capture Page: A lead capture page is the page where you sell the affiliate product. The page should explain the product details and also have a form where you can capture the email id of the visitor. Then you can keep sending automated messages for follow-up. Make sure that your page does not allow the visitor to click on a link and move on. Either he fills up the contact form or leaves.

4. Aggressive Follow-up: When your list of visitors grows, you will need to use auto responders to manage communication. The idea is not to lose touch with the visitors unless they want to unsubscribe. Keep feeding them with valuable information with respect to your field. It can be about latest news, emerging opportunities, case studies and product updates. Slowly and gradually, keep influencing them to purchase your product. Take care that you do not spam them else you will have more withdrawals than leads.

5. Do Article Marketing: This is one of the simplest ways to promote your affiliate products. Write 3-5 articles regularly and submit them to various e-libraries. Over a period of time, the volume of your articles will have a snowballing effect and bring you a large number of visitors to your site.

Follow the above steps in order to be successful in affiliate marketing.
