Social Marketing Tips | 5 Things to Avoid with Automated Social Bookmarking

March 24th, 2009

Automated tools can be a serious blessing especially in Social Media Marketing.

Not all tools are created equal and with any tool there is a right way to use it and the wrong way. Often people intentionally abuse the power of these tools and some just get carried away. I am going to help you avoid 5 things that will sabotage your automated social bookmarking success, if you do them.

When these tools are used incorrectly intentionally it is known as blackhat marketing. Basically abusing the tools and systems in place to get faster results, which do not necessarily mean quality results. This type of abuse can get your sites banned and even could have your ISP service cancel you. Not to mention being banned by the social sites you took advantage of.

When you use these tools properly you will see great results and keep your credibility in check. Automated social bookmarking tools can help you promote websites, blogs, social sites, videos and more.

Here are 5 things to avoid when using automated social bookmarking:

1. Do not only bookmark your links. This happens all too well, the purpose of these social bookmarking sites are to share valuable info and/or things you enjoy. If you are only promoting you, you, you then you are not following this rule and will be labeled as a social bookmarking spammer.

2. Do not be repetitive. Some people will sign up for multiple accounts and then bookmark the same pages over and over again. Do no create more than one account with each service unless you have different niches you are working in. Link to each page one time per different social site to avoid abusing the system.

3. Do not bookmark every page of your site. This is a surefire way to look like social bookmarking spammer.

4. Do not use your automated tool for hours. Running your automated tool and submitting way too often can quickly get you banned.

5. Know your software. Before you use any free automated social bookmarking tool or buy one make sure to understand the features and how to use them properly. Not knowing what something does could put you in the position of getting banned for simply not knowing you were abusing a feature.

Keep the above in mind and you will be able to use automation in your bookmarking without harming your credibility. There are many sites out there, do some research and find 5-10 that will work best for your niche. You can grow this number a 100+ when using automated tools as it is just not realistic to keep up with that many any other way.

Whichever sites you pick, make sure to add quality content that you enjoy. Spamming is ugly no matter what type of marketing it is being done in. People want value, so give it to them. Also be diligent in picking the tools you use to automate. Look for quality features and a great reputation when you choose your tools for success.

Social Marketing Tips: Social Marketing 101

March 20th, 2009

Social Media Marketing is much more than MySpace. There are many different avenues of which you can get social with your marketing. As the name suggests social marketing is about getting social! Using social media can be time consuming, however as technology evolves and social media gains popularity more applications are being created to help organize and save time with those using this powerful technique. Social media should be part of your marketing strategy.

There are 4 crucial elements to create powerful social media frenzy. Learning these basics will help you gain credibility, more readers and longevity.

1. Get a blog.

Some people do not think of blogs as social marketing. Those people are stuck on social sites and missing an integral piece of the social media puzzle. By posting often, interacting with your readers and allowing them to interact with you via widgets, plugins and blog communities to name a few you can create a very social atmosphere. You will also gain credibility, fans and more traffic if you are consistent.

2. Social sites.

Pick 4-10 core social sites to interact and add value to. Get to know how each one operates and the rules as well. Create a profile that is intriguing and brands you and your interest. You want people to want to know more and those with similar interests to be compelled to contact you. Note I did not say anything about plastering your business and products on your profile. Just like your blog you will need to interact and add value through your content.

3. The art of conversation.

Start conversations with your target market and people who have similar interests. Search for groups on the social site that you can add value to. When talking to others find out about them, see how you can add value to their life. Be of service. Do not go into the conversation virtually puking on them with your opportunity, products and services. If someone asks you what you do, tell them. However, do not look at this as an opportunity to pitch them.

4. Get organized.

If you want to win at social marketing then you will have to have an organized plan of action. Take massive action and be consistent with the methods you have chosen. A system created by you or one of the many on the market that walks you through step-by-step on what to do each day will be a surefire way to get results and stay on track. There are also so great social media marketing communities that you can find where you can get tips and tactics that others are using.

Some good free communities to get involved with are BlogCatalog, MyBlogLog and BetterNetworker.
